Traffic
on highways and other roads is ever increasing and therefore the dictum of
the day is to have stronger and durable roads. The experience world over has made it
abundantly clear that concrete roads enjoy clear advantage over bituminous
roads. Most important advantages of
concrete roads are of durability i.e longer life of
30 years or more and negligible maintenance requirements. The fuel
consumption and other vehicle operating costs are also lower in case of
concrete roads. Construction of
concrete roads using fly ash as one of the ingredients of concrete mix helps
in conservation of natural resources.
A number of Indian cities including Mumbai, |

The
only reason that has restricted the adoption of concrete roads in greater
numbers is their initial cost which is slightly higher than that of
bituminous roads. However, modern
technology and the use of industrial wastes like flyash
in concrete mix during construction can bring down the initial cost of such
roads. Considering the various
advantages and longer life, concrete roads work out to be cheaper on life
cycle cost basis. Concrete roads are
techno-economically superior to bituminous roads and use an indigenous
material, cement as binder which is readily available. |

In
order to highlight the various advantages of the concrete roads and also to
create awareness about the latest trends in construction of concrete roads
and use of industrial wastes, it is proposed to conduct a one-day workshop on
cement concrete roads. There
is no registration fee for participation in the Workshop. |
