· Life cycle Assessment – LCA study for cement sector has been studied for the first time to evaluate input & output in terms of thermal energy and electrical energy, raw materials and emissions of starting from mining to despatch of cement. The impact analysis like global warming, acidification, resource conservation and land use etc. is studied for four geographical locations. LCA study will help cement plants to identify and improve the environmental parameters on continuous basis. |

· Global warming – NCB studied measures for reduction of green house gases (GHG). Measures adopted by International cement industry has been documented and quantum of energy saved in terms of thermal and electrical power has been taken into consideration. Various measures adopted by the Indian cement industry reduction in thermal energy achieved resulting lower emissions of green house gases have been studied in details. The concept of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) ultimately provides the economic benefits to the industry.
·
Utilization of Hazardous
Wastes – NCB studied physico-chemico-mechanical
characteristics of various derived fuels (WDF) like Shredded tyres, ETP Sludge,
Plastic waste etc. for use as secondary fuel and recommended technological
measures. Trial runs of some WDF in cement plants have been carried out.
· Development of National Environmental Norms for Industries– NCB has developed norms and guidelines for refractory industry. NOx and SO2 emissions is being developed by NCB and CPCB
· Sustainable Development for Environmental Protection – Under this initiative the carrying capacity of the Kuchch District, Gujarat in terms of various natural resources such as ground water, agricultural produce, animal husbandry, fishing, flora & fauna and other such as industries, ports, minerals and power generation have been assessed covering 11731 square kilometres. The Resource Management Plan covering drought and famine control, water and soil spread control; enhancement of agricultural production had been covered. It also includes measures for the developments of mineral based industry particularly cement industry.
· To Enhance Environmental Consciousness in Indian Cement Industry – NCB has instituted National Awards for Environmental Excellence separately for plant and lime stone mine. The awards are expected to encourage cement industry to improve its achievements in environmental friendliness and strive for sustainable development, particularly through utilization of wastes in cement manufacture and reduction in GHG.
